The ship’s captain

By Design was started in 1993 by Ian Byington, and over the years grew into a creative arts concern, making websites, selling hosting spaces & domain names, laying out & publishing books, and offering consultations on a wide range of graphic arts/writing areas, as well as writing a near-daily local online newspaper.

After making over 500 websites for islanders as well as folks all over the world, Ian sold the webpage-making part of the operation to Mary Kate Berger of MKate Design in Friday Harbor, WA (see her portfolio here!)

In 1997, Ian started the San Juan Update on San Juan Island, Washington in the USA, which grew to reach some 3000 readers a day (hey, the island only has 7000 folks!) by the time he sold it to Tim Dustrude in 2012.

That leaves Ian with managing the hosting/domain name needs of over 200 clients, as well as handling consulting duties and managing writing projects and preparing manuscripts for publication.
